WSC men fall at Augustana

            Augustana used a 44-30 advantage in rebounding and 19-3 edge in second chance points to defeat Wayne State College 80-70 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Tuesday evening at the Sioux Falls Arena.  Both teams are now 3-3 in the NSIC as Augustana improves to 8-4 while WSC falls to 8-6.
            The first half was a close battle until a late scoring run by the host Vikings in the final two minutes of the half.
            The two teams traded 17 lead changes and five ties in the opening half of play.
            With Augustana leading 26-21 at the 6:25 mark of the first half, WSC went on an 11-2 run to grab their biggest lead of the game at 32-29 with 2:48 remaining in the half following a Matt Thomas layup.
            But Augustana closed the half with nine straight points to take the lead for good at 38-32.
            The Wildcats got as close as five early in the second half at 42-37, but the Vikings closed out the Wildcats with a 12-2 run to go in front 54-39.
            Augustana pushed the lead to 20 several times and finished with an 80-70 win.
            Kendall Jacks and Vance Janssen scored 12 points each to lead Wayne State in scoring while Jordan Cornelius also hit double digits with 10.
            Wayne State was 27 of 63 from the field for 42.9 percent, including 11 of 25 from the 3-point line.  The Wildcats were just 5 of 8 at the free throw line.
            Augustana's top scorer was Steven Schaefer with 21 points followed by Matt Cartwright with 15.  Marcus Asmus added 11 points for the Vikings.
            The Vikings finished the game making 29 of 67 shots for 43.3 percent.  Augustana was 7 of 16 behind the arc and 15 for 17 at the charity stripe.
            Augustana held a sizeable 44-30 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats.  Austin Esters grabbed five rebounds to lead the Wildcats.
            Both teams had 13 turnovers in the game, but the Vikings held a 19-3 advantage in second chance points thanks to 15 offensive rebounds. 
            Wayne State resumes play following the holiday break on Saturday, December 30th with a 4 p.m. game at the University of Sioux Falls.
