Late rallies give Concordia-St. Paul NSIC softball sweep over Wildcats

           Concordia-St. Paul used late rallies in both games to defeat Wayne State College 7-4 and 11-9 in a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at Carlander Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The host Golden Bears improve to 10-15 and 2-2 in league play while WSC falls to 6-22 and 0-4 in the NSIC.
            In the opener, the host Golden Bears erupted for a five-run fifth inning to erase a 2-1 Wildcat lead as Concordia-St. Paul posted a 6-2 win.
            WSC scored the first run of the game in the top of the third when Sarah Hunter walked and later scored on a Monique Alyea RBI single. 
            After CSP tied the score with one run in the bottom of the third, WSC regained the lead with a two-out rally in the fifth inning when Katelyn Wobken tripled and scored on Emily Chandler's RBI single for a 2-1 Wildcat lead.
            But the Golden Bears came up with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a pair of home runs to highlight a five hit inning as Concordia-St. Paul took a 6-2 advantage.
            The Wildcats closed within 6-4 in the top of the sixth when Rachel Shumaker walked followed by a Jordyn Breitbarth home run to left field.
            Concordia-St. Paul scored again in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-4 lead.  WSC got two runners on base and had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh before the Golden Bears got the final out to hang on for the 7-4 win.
            WSC had seven hits in the game.  Monique Alyea was 2 for 3 with an RBI followed by Breitbarth with a two-run homer.  Wobken had a triple and run scored while Melanie Alyea, Chandler and Shumaker each singled.
            Junior starter Nataliah Hopkins (6-12) suffered the pitching loss, charged with 11 hits and six runs over 5 2/3 innings.  Freshman Allison Niemeier worked 1/3 of an inning and allowed one run on one hit with one walk.
            The second game saw Concordia-St. Paul score five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to rally in an 11-9 win over the Wildcats to complete the sweep.
            Trailing 2-0 after two innings, WSC scored one in the third and three in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead.  Wobken doubled and scored on a CSP throwing error for the first run.  Jenna Stewart had a two-run single in the fourth and later scored on a Wildcat pitch for the third run of the inning.
            CSP scored five runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, but WSC responded with three in the top of the fifth to even the score at 7-7.  Shumaker singled and scored on a wild pitch while Wobken produced a two-run single.
            But the Golden Bears responded again and plated four runs in the fifth for an 11-7 lead.  WSC closed the scoring with two run in the top of the sixth on a Breitbarth RBI double and Alyssa Schropp's run-scoring single to make the final 11-9.
            WSC had 13 hits in the game to 12 for Concordia-St. Paul.  Breitbarth was 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored while Wobken ended 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI.  Stewart was 2 for 3 with two RBI followed by Shumaker going 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
            Sophomore Riley Vanderveen (0-7) was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings with six walks and one strikeout.  Freshman Allison Niemeier worked 1/3 inning and gave up three runs on two hits while Hopkins pitched one inning and was charged with one run on one hit.
            The Wildcats visit #21 Minnesota State Sunday in a noon doubleheader at Mankato, Minnesota.
