Game 2 - UC-Colorado Springs 16 Wayne State 4

            The Wayne State College baseball team dropped their season opening doubleheader at UC-Colorado Springs Saturday played at Falcon Field on the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The host Mountain Lions rallied to win the opener 6-5 and completed the sweep with a 16-4 victory.  UCCS is now 4-4 on the year with WSC sitting at 0-2.
            In the opener, the host Mountain Lions rallied from a 5-1 deficit after two innings and scored the game-winning run on a Wildcat error in the bottom of the seventh to give UCCS a 6-5 come-from-behind victory.
            WSC scored twice in the top of the first when leadoff batter Jake Lorenzini reached on a UCCS error and scored on a Tanner Simons double to right field.  Simons later scored on a Bryce Bisenius fielder's choice for a 2-0 WSC lead.
            After the Mountain Lions plated one run in the bottom of the first, WSC countered with three in the top of the second for a 5-1 advantage.  Sophomore Peyton Barnes tripled to center field and scored on an error by the Mountain Lion catcher for the first Wildcat run.  Jackson Petersen singled and scored on an RBI single to left field by Simons with the final WSC run coming when Lorenzini walked and scored when David Janes reached on a UCCS error.
            UCCS scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth on a two-run homer by Scott Martinez to tie the game at 5-5 and chase Wildcat starter Aidan Breedlove.
            The score remained 5-5 until the seventh when the Mountain Lions used a pair of singles and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs, then win the game on a Wildcat error by right fielder David Janes to rally for the 6-5 win.
            UCCS held a 9-6 advantage on hits in the opener over WSC.  Simons was a perfect 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.  Barnes tripled with Petersen getting a single for the other Wildcat hit.
            Breedlove started the game and lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.  Reliever Lawson Zenner worked the next three innings and allowed three hits and an unearned run with five strikeouts.  Senior Adam Poldberg retired the lone batter he faced while senior Brady Johnson was tagged with the loss after allowing a hit batter and error on the two batters faced.
            The second game saw Colorado Springs erupt for 16 runs to help sweep Wayne State 16-4. 
            The Mountain Lions scored four runs in the first, two in the second, third and fourth innings and six in the fifth.
            WSC scored one in the fifth when Garrett Graveline singled and scored when Tanner Simons reached base on an error.  The 'Cats added two runs in the sixth on just one hit and two UCCS errors.  Andrew Hanson doubled and scored on a throwing error for the first run with the second coming Peyton Barnes walked and later scored on another UCCS error.
            The last WSC run came in the seventh when Simons reached on an error and scored on a Mountain Lion error.
            Wayne State had six hits in the contest.  Simons and Hanson each doubled for the Wildcats while Jake Lorenzini, David Janes, Barnes and Graveline each recorded singles.
            Starter Hunter Wienhoff was one of six Wildcat pitchers and suffered the loss, allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits over 1 2/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
            Wayne State will face Regis Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Central Time in Denver.
