Wayne State used five home runs to win the opener 16-6, but the bats went silent in the second game as Newman rallied late with 10 runs in the final three innings as the Jets salvaged a split of the doubleheader with a 11-5 win over the Wildcats to split a non-conference college baseball twinbill at McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kansas. WSC is now 2-6 overall while Newman is 5-9.
The opener saw the Wildcats crush five home runs and 16 hits in a 16-6 win over the Jets. Senior
Tanner Simons and junior Travis Miller each homered twice to lead the Wildcat hit parade, highlighted by a nine-run third inning.
WSC took a 1-0 lead in the second on Miller's lead off blast over the left field wall.
After Newman took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, WSC took control in the top of the third with a nine run inning.
Simons led off the third with a homer. Four batters later, Miller connected for a three-run homer for his second long ball of the contest. Other big hits to highlight the inning included a two-runs single from David Janes and an RBI single from
Bryce Bisenius, giving the 'Cats a 10-2 lead.
Newman got within 10-6 with a four-run fifth inning, but WSC put the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh for a 16-6 win. Simons blasted a two-run shot for his second homer of the game in the sixth while Peyton Barnes clubbed a grand slam homer in the seventh to close out the scoring.
WSC had 16 hits in the win. Simons was 3 for 4 with two homers and three RBI. Miller ended 2 for 3 with a pair of homers and four RBI. David Janes was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI while Barnes finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored and a grand slam.
Zane Zitek and
Bryce Bisenius each added two hits in the win.
Junior Charles Hasty (1-1) earned the pitching win, working 4 2/3 innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Spencer Johnson recorded one out while
Jordan Mehl retired all six batters he faced in the final two innings.
The second game saw the Wildcat bats go dormant as WSC was held to just two hits in the first six innings while Newman erupted late for 10 runs in the final three innings to break open a close game as the Jets earned a split with an 11-5 win over the Wildcats.
WSC went without a hit until one out in the fourth when Peyton Barnes doubled.
With Newman leading 1-0 entering the sixth, WSC evened the score at 1-1 on a David Janes RBI single.
But the Jets scored twice in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 advantage.
The Wildcats countered with two runs in the top of the seventh as Jackson Petersen's double scored
Bryce Bisenius (single) and Travis Miller (walk) to make the score 3-3.
Newman took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the seventh and plated six runs in the eighth for an 11-3 lead.
WSC scored twice in the ninth with
Kyle Thompson producing a two-run homer to make the final 11-5.
Wayne State had just five hits in the contest. Thompson had a two-run homer with Petersen adding a two-run double. Barnes doubled while Janes and Bisenius each singled.
Starter Lawson Zenner (0-1) was the hard luck loser, working six strong innings and allowing just three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. Adam Poldberg,

Brady Johnson each worked in relief for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Pittsburg State (11-5) in Kansas starting at 1 p.m.
