St. Cloud State posted victories of 3-1 and 12-4 Saturday afternoon over Wayne State at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Neb. The games were moved to Wayne due to excessive snow in the St. Cloud area. SCSU is now 18-9 and 11-4 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 9-17 and 7-9 in conference play.
The opener saw St. Cloud State's Shannon Ahern limit the Wildcats to just four hits as the Huskies posted a 3-1 win.
WSC scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first as Andrew Hanson walked and scored on a SCSU throwing error to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
St. Cloud State took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in the bottom of the sixth to conclude the pitchers' dual as Ahern and Wayne State's Hunter Wienhoff both fired complete games.
Wayne State had just four hits in the game with David Janes going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.
Bryce Bisenius and Colin Chick also singled.
Wienhoff (2-3) suffered the pitching loss despite the complete game effort, allowing just three runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
The second game saw both teams trade runs early on before the Huskies pulled away late for a 12-4 win to complete the sweep.
The 'Cats opened the scoring with two runs in the first on an RBI double from Travis Miller and a run-scoring single from
Bryce Bisenius.
After St. Cloud State took a 4-2 lead with four runs in the second inning, WSC knotted the score at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the fourth when Garrett Graveline walked and scored on a
Tanner Simons triple with Simons coming home on a St. Cloud State throwing error to even the score.
St. Cloud State regained the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-4 advantage.
The Huskies would then score multiple runs in the next three innings and held the Wildcats scoreless to make the final score 12-4.
Senior reliever
Brady Johnson was tagged with the loss allowing one earned run in 2.1 innings of work while striking out three.
Sunday's scheduled doubleheader between St. Cloud State and Wayne State has been cancelled due to the weather. The Wildcats are scheduled to be home Wednesday afternoon hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a 1:30 p.m. NSIC doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
