Sloan Cooksey combined for a three-hit shutout as Wayne State shut out Slippery Rock of Pennsylvania 2-0 Wednesday morning at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. The Wildcats are now 8-12 on the season while The Rock drops to 5-8.
The Wildcats capitalized on two errors by the Rock defense in the bottom of the first.
Kortney Buresh led off the inning with a single.
Kim Vidlak followed with an RBI double scoring Buresh after an error by the Slippery Rock left fielder.
Wayne State had back-to-back base runners again in the first after
Ashley Hernandez reached on a catcher's interference call and Micheala Smith walked. An RBI single by
Paiton Tornberg sent Smith home to give Wayne State a two-run edge.
Slippery Rock threatened to score in the fourth inning on two walks and a Wildcat fielding error, but WSC got out of the bases loaded jam to keep the score 2-0.
The Rock recorded two of their three hits in the seventh inning, but left runners on first and second base to end the game as the Wildcats posted their second shutout win of the season.
The Wildcats collected five hits. Buresh led the day finishing 3 for 3 with a triple and one run scored. Vidlak collected an RBI double with one run scored.
Paiton Tornberg added a single and an RBI.
Hadley Chvatal (4-2) earned the win for the Wildcats after pitching four shutout innings with three strikeouts.
Sloan Cooksey got the save after holding Slippery Rock to no runs and striking out four batters over the final three innings.
Wayne State was scheduled to play Urbana (Ohio) in another game Wednesday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida.
