Rockhurst 2 Wayne State 1
Rockhurst edged Wayne State College 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the Washburn Invitational Softball Tournament in Topeka, Kansas, keeping the Wildcats winless on the young season at 0-3 while the Hawks improved to 2-1.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Rockhurst scored both of their runs on three doubles for a 2-0 lead.
Wayne State scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman
Katie Humburg walked to start the inning and later scored on an
Ashley Hernandez RBI single.
The Wildcats could not produce another scoring threat in the final two innings and fell to the Hawks 2-1.
Rockhurst had one more hit than WSC 7-6. Hernandez finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and RBI.
Kim Vidlak tripled while
Kortney Buresh,
Kamryn Sparks and Riley Holberg each singled.
Sophomore starter
Hadley Chvatal (0-2) was tagged with the pitching loss, working the first four innings. She allowed five hits and two runs with three strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore reliever
Sloan Cooksey pitched the final three innings and yielded two hits and no runs with two walks and one strikeout.
Wayne State was scheduled to face Truman State late Saturday afternoon at the Washburn Invite.
