Pittsburg State 5 Wayne State 4
After Wayne State tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning, Pittsburg State came back and handed the Wildcats a heartbreaking defeat by scoring in the bottom of the seventh without a hit as the Gorillas edged WSC 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Washburn Invitational Softball Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. WSC slips to 0-5 on the year while Pittsburg State is now 3-5.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning. WSC started the scoring with five hits in the opening frame.
Kortney Buresh led off with a single and scored on an
Ashley Hernandez single up the middle.
Kamryn Sparks doubled to right field scoring
Kim Vidlak (single) for a 2-0 Wildcat lead and
Michaela Smith had an RBI double that brought home Sparks for the third run.
After the Gorillas tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the first, the score remained 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Pittsburg State plated one run for a 4-3 lead.
WSC responded in the top of the seventh to even the score at 4-4. Vidlak singled to start the inning and crossed home plate on a Hernandez RBI double with no outs. Sparks was intentionally walked and Pittsburg State got a double play and a ground ball to get out of the inning to have the game remain tied at 4-4.
The Gorillas then took the momentum back in the bottom of the seventh and came up with four walks to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 win.
Wayne State outhit Pittsburg State in the game 11-6. Vidlak went 4 for 4 with four singles and two runs scored. Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI while Sparks ended 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Smith doubled while Buresh and
Emily Hale each singled to round out Wayne State's 11-hit attack.
Reliever
Sloan Cooksey (0-1) suffered the hard luck loss for the Wildcats. Starter
Maddie Moser worked six innings and allowed six hits and four runs with two strikeouts and five walks.
Wayne State was slated to face Fort Hays State to close out play at the Washburn Invitational late Sunday afternoon.
