In a battle for Wayne State bragging rights it was Wayne State University of Michigan taking a doubleheader from Wayne State College Friday afternoon and evening in Auburndale, Florida by scores of 8-0 and 13-3 at the Russ Matt Invitational. The Warriors are now 9-2 with the wins while the Wildcats drop to 5-7.
The opener saw the Warriors break open a tight game with four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to post an 8-0 win over the Wildcats.
WSC was held to just three hits in the contest while the Warriors had 10 and took advantage of five Wildcat errors.
Carter Thomas,
Colin Lynam and
Braden Cannon each singled for WSC.
Sophomore starter
Corbin Kirk (0-1) was tagged with the pitching loss despite fanning nine batters in four innings of work. He allowed just two hits and one run.
Josh Kilzer and
Adam Eggert also worked in relief for WSC.
The second game saw Wayne State University produce four runs in the second and seven runs in the third inning on their way to a 13-3 win over the Wildcats.
WSC scored first in the bottom of the first when
Hunter Babe's RBI single brought home Thomas, who walked.
Wayne State (Mich.) then came up with four in the second and seven runs in the third for an 11-1 lead.
WSU added single runs in the fifth and sixth for a 13-1 lead.
The Wildcats closed the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Thomas walked and later scored on a wild pitch while the WSC run in the seventh came when
Nick Barnett had an RBI double to bring home
Keagan McLaughlin, who walked.
WSC had four hits in the second game, led by Thomas going 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. Babe had an RBI single and Barnett an RBI double.
