Ryan Obrecht fired 7 1/3 innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run, to lead Wayne State College in a 5-1 win over Ashland (Ohio) Saturday morning at the Russ Matt Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, Florida. The Wildcats are now 6-7 with the win while the Eagles drop to 7-5.
Wayne State opened the scoring in the third inning when
Nate Cunningham reached on an Ashland error and scored on a ground out from
Quinn McCafferty for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
The 'Cats scored again in the fourth when
Hunter Babe was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.
WSC took a 4-0 lead in the fifth with a pair of runs when
Cade Lynam and McCafferty opened the inning with singles and both scored on a
Colin Lynam single to center field.
Ashland avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth inning but WSC added an insurance run in the ninth when McCafferty doubled and scored on a
Colin Lynam double for a 5-1 final score.
Wayne State held a 9-6 edge in hits over the Eagles.
Colin Lynam went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI. McCafferty finished 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored while
Carter Thomas,
Braden Cannon,
Kyler Essink and
Cade Lynam each singled.
Obrecht improved to 3-0 on the season with a strong start on the mound, working 7 1/3 innings. He allowed just four hits and one run with four strikeouts and no walks. Cannon came on to seal the win and earn his second save of the season, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings allowing two hits with one strikeout.
Wayne State will close their annual spring break trip to Florida Sunday morning facing Grand Valley State of Michigan at 9 a.m. Central Time in Winter Haven, Florida.
