Game Recap: Baseball |

Late rally gives Sioux Falls 8-7 win over Wildcats in series finale

Wayne State rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning, only to watch the host Sioux Falls Cougars score single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to rally for a 8-7 win over the Wildcats in the finale of a three-game Northern Sun Conference baseball series that concluded Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium.  WSC is now 22-22 and 16-14 in the NSIC while USF is 13-31 and 12-19 in league play.
Sioux Falls jumped out to a quick four-run first inning and added another in the second for a 5-0 lead.
WSC came back to tie the game in the top of the third with five runs.  Hunter Babe had a two-run double to right center field scoring Carter Thomas (single) and Colin Lynam (walk).  Babe later scored on a Blake Stanley sacrifice fly while freshman third baseman Braden Cannon added a two-run double to right center field that scored Trey Wells (single) and Quinn McCafferty (hit by pitch).
The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a run to go in front 6-5, but WSC evened the score in the fifth with one run to make the score 6-6.  Stanley had a leadoff single and scored on an infield single by Thomas.
Wayne State took their only lead of the game at 7-6 with one run in the top of the seventh as Cannon walked and came home on a fielder's choice by Thomas.
But Sioux Falls rallied with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to post the 8-7 win to avoid the series sweep after WSC won Saturday's games by scores of 4-2 and 20-12.
Wayne State held a 13-9 edge in hits over the Cougars and left 14 runners on base to just five by Sioux Falls.
Cade Lynam led WSC at the plate going 3 for 6 with a double.  Babe finished 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI while Thomas and Chase Douglas each had two singles.
Reliever Braden Cannon (2-1) suffered the pitching loss in 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout.  Starter Nathan Anderson worked seven innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Wayne State will host #25 Minnesota State Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the final home games of the season for the Wildcats at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
