WSC Gets Swept in Home Finale by Minnesota State

Wayne State fell in a pair of games to Minnesota State in the home finale in Wayne Tuesday afternoon. Wayne State falls to 22-24 with a 16-16 record in the NSIC. Minnesota State moves to 32-13 with a 22-8 record in the NSIC. 

GAME ONE: Minnesota State 9 Wayne State 6

Wayne State would jump out to the early lead in the game highlighted by a Quinn McCafferty triple to right center. He would score off a Hunter Babe single down the right field line making it 1-0 WSC. MSU wouldn't take long to take the lead, scoring three runs off of three hits in the second inning making it 3-1 Mavericks. Wayne State would get one more run from Braden Cannon in the second, scoring off a wild pitch making it 3-2 MSU. The Mavericks would also tack on five more runs in the third inning making it 8-1 in favor of MSU. In the fourth, Wayne State would score three runs, first off a RBI single from Cade Lynam bringing in Carter Thomas who walked to get on base. The next two runs for WSC would come off a two run RBI double from Colin Lynam down the left field line. MSU would still lead 8-5 after four innings. In the fifth DH Trey Wells would get to third off a pair of wild pitches and score off a Maverick error cutting the lead to two. Minnesota State would score one more run in the sixth making the final 9-6. 

Colin Lynam would be the leading batter for WSC, going 1-4 from the plate with two RBIs for WSC. Jacob Kneifl was the losing pitcher for WSC, throwing 71 pitches in 2.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Ryan Obrecht, Nolan Belt, Dylan Rodgers, and Logan Walters pitched in relief for WSC. 


GAME TWO: Minnesota State 11 Wayne State 5

Wayne State again would take the early lead in game two scoring in the second inning when Wells was brought in by Chase Douglas making it 1-0 'Cats. A two run RBI single from MSU would give them the lead in the third inning while WSC left a pair of runners on base. A pair of walks allowed by Wayne state would lead to an RBI single from MSU to extend the lead to 3-1. The next play would see another Minnesota State single, this one down the left field line bringing in two runs making it 5-1. MSU would bring in one more run in the inning on a Wildcat wild pitch making it 6-1 after four innings. Wildcats would make it a one run game in the sixth inning off a sac fly from Douglas allowing Cannon to score. Next, Cade Lynam would triple to right center bringing in a pair of runs to make it 6-4 WSC. Noah Strizek would make it 6-5 WSC after he singled to right field. MSU would extend their lead in the seventh inning off a triple to left center allowing three runs to score making it 9-5 MSU. MSU would tack on a pair of runs in the ninth inning making it a 11-5 final. 

Leading WSC was Wells going 2-4 from the plate with a pair of runs scored. Cade Lynam and Douglas would also have a pair of RBIs each for WSC in the loss. 

Kolt Davis was the losing pitcher for WSC going four innings. He also threw a pair of strikeouts. Josh Kilzer, Adam Eggert, Cannon and Walters threw in relief for Wayne State.

UP NEXT: 

Wayne State will be in action May 6th and 7th to close the regular season taking on St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minnesota. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
