Box Score Wayne State had five players reach double figures while sinking 13 3-pointers, but the Wildcats could not overcome a game-high 23 points from Emporia State's Faith Paramore as the Hornets out-scored Wayne State 87-82 in a non-conference women's basketball game played Wednesday evening at Emporia, Kansas. The Wildcats drop to 1-1 on the season while the Hornets are 2-1.
The opening quarter saw the host Hornets jump out to early leads of 5-0 and 17-8 at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter. WSC went on a 10-2 run and closed within two at 19-18 following a
Delaney Clark 3-pointer before Emporia State capped the quarter with a 25-22 lead.
Wayne State opened the second quarter with a basket from
Kylah vanDonkersgoed and a 3-pointer by
Carsyn Boswell to take their first lead of the night at 27-25 with 8:28 remaining in the opening half.
The two teams traded several lead changes throughout the rest of the quarter with the final lead for the Wildcats coming at 44-41 following a Clark 3-pointer with 2:26 to go before halftime.
The Hornets then closed the half strong on a 9-2 run to grab a 50-46 lead at the intermission thanks to 55 percent (20-36) shooting in the opening half.
Emporia State began the third quarter scoring the first nine points to take the biggest lead of the game at 59-46 with 8:29 to go in the quarter.
The Wildcats slowly chipped away at the Hornet lead and got within three at 67-64 following a pair of
Tate Norblade free throws as Emporia State ended the third quarter with a 70-64 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Wayne State would produce several rallies to close within three but that's as close as the 'Cats would get in suffering the 87-82 loss.
A step back jumper by Boswell early in the quarter pulled WSC within 72-69 with 9:13 to play.
After Emporia State held an 80-74 lead, WSC got within three again following a free throw by
Abby Kopecky with 58 seconds to play.
A
Maya Fitzpatrick 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining got the 'Cats within 85-82 before the Hornets sank a pair of free throws late for the 87-82 final margin.
A career-high 15 points from vanDonkersgoed along with 15 more by Fitzpatrick led Wayne State in scoring.
Delaney Clark added 14 points, all in the first half. Norblade finished with 12, including 10-12 at the free throw line, while Boswell also hit double digits with 11.
Wayne State made 26 of 59 shots from the field for 44.1 percent, including 13-25 (52%) behind the arc. The 'Cats were also a solid 17 of 22 (77.3%) at the charity stripe.
For Emporia State, Faith Paramore poured in a game-high 23 points. Katie Horyna added 18 with Gracie Gilpin and Makenzie McDaniel each recording 10 points.
ESU shot 45.6 percent from field on 31 of 68 shots. The Hornets were 9 of 24 from the 3-point line and 16 of 22 at the foul line.
Emporia State held a 38-33 edge in rebounding over WSC with
Meg Rietz grabbing eight boards for the 'Cats. Boswell was credited with five assists while Rietz had two blocked shots.
The next game for the Wildcats is Wednesday evening, November 20
th when Wayne State hosts Nebraska-Kearney at 5:30 p.m. in the home opener at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
