Box Score Five players reached double digit kills for #9 Concordia-St. Paul as the Golden Bears topped #11 Wayne State 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. CSP is now 18-4 and 13-1 in NSIC games while WSC is 19-5 on the season and 11-3 in league play.
The host Golden Bears used four service aces in the opening set to down the Wildcats 25-20. After trailing 18-13 in the set, the 'Cats battled back got as close as 19-17 and 21-19 before falling 25-20.
Taya Beller and
Maggie Brahmer each had four kills for WSC.
The second set saw the Wildcats take control midway through the set to record a 25-20 win to even the match.
With the score tied at 10-10, WSC used a Beller kill, service ace by
Anna Borner, two kills from
Channatee Robles and another kill from Brahmer to take the lead for good at 16-12 in the set.
Robles had five kills in the set with Borner adding two aces as WSC hit a match-high .306 in the set with 13 kills and just two attack errors.
The third set was a close battle until the host Golden Bears snapped a 17-17 tie to surge late for a 25-18 set win.
WSC held a 14-11 lead following a solo block by Beller. With WSC still leading 16-14, the Golden Bears scored six of the next seven points for a 20-17 lead and then scored five of the final six points for a 25-18 set win.
Beller had four kills and a solo block for WSC in the third set.
The Wildcats trailed much of the fourth set, rallied to force an 18-18 tie until the Golden Bears closed the set strong again for a 25-21 set win to take the match 3-1.
Down 18-13, WSC used a CSP service error, back-to-back blocks by Brahmer and
Taylor Bunjer, along with a Brahmer kill and Golden Bear attack error to tie the score at 18-18. But CSP scored five of the next six points to gain a 23-19 lead and closed with a 25-21 set win.
Brahmer had six kills on eight swings with three blocks in the fourth set to pace the Wildcats.
Concordia-St. Paul held a .258 to .188 edge in hitting over the Wildcats. WSC had 42 kills and was out-blocked by the Golden Bears 8-5.
Brahmer and Beller each had 14 kills for Wayne State. Freshman setter
Molly Romano had a double-double with 34 assists and 14 digs while libero
Brooke Peltz was credited with 18 digs. Bunjer had a team-high four blocks with Brahmer adding three.
The Wildcats will be at home next weekend host MSU Moorhead Friday at 6 p.m. and #21 Northern State Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.
