Wayne State baseball recorded 7-1 and 16-0 wins Saturday afternoon over Bemidji State in neutral site Northern Sun Conference baseball played at Frerichs Legion Field in Elkhorn. The 'Cats are now 3-0 while the Beavers drop to 0-3 on the young season.
The opener saw the Wildcats hold BSU to just four hits and take advantage of four Beaver errors as WSC opened the doubleheader with a 7-1 victory.
WSC scored four runs in the second without a hit, using a hit batter, walk, several stolen bases and a pair of Bemidji State errors to take a 4-0 lead.
BSU got a solo homer in the third to make the score 4-1, but WSC came back with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings for the 7-1 win.
Quinn McCafferty had an RBI single in the fourth that scored
Cam Madsen.
Colin Lynam singled in the fifth and later scored on a BSU error to make the score 6-1 and in the seventh
Braden Cannon walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Chase Douglas to make the final 7-1.
Madsen was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the 'Cats offensively.
Trey Wells had a pair of singles going 2 for 3 while
Colin Lynam finished 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Junior starter
Jackson Shelburne worked five strong innings for the win, allowing three hits and one run with six strikeouts.
Alex Calabrese and
Eli Crnkovich each worked one inning of scoreless relief.
The second game saw
Nathan Anderson and
Josh Kilzer combine on a two-hit shutout as the 'Cats rolled to a 16-0 win in seven innings.
WSC scored three runs in the first and five more in the second to jump out to an early 8-0 lead.
Trey Wells had an RBI triple and
Colin Lynam an RBI single in the first inning while Wells belted a two-run double in the second with
Quinn McCafferty adding a double for another big hit.
The 'Cats added three runs in the sixth and another five in the seventh to cap the 16-0 win.
Max Heard with a two-run single was the key hit in the sixth inning.
Dylan Jutze had a two-run double in the seventh with
Nick Ripa adding an RBI single.
Wayne State had 13 hits in the win.
Carter Thomas was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Wells ended 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored while
Kyler Essink also had two hits with two runs scored.
Anderson fired six innings of one-hit ball for the win with three strikeouts. Kilzer pitched the seventh and allowed one hit.
Wayne State and Bemidji State conclude their four-game NSIC series with a nine-inning contest Sunday beginning at noon in Elkhorn.
