Wildcat women's golf signs three recruits for 2024-25 season

2/15/2024 9:01:00 AM

Wayne State College head women's golf coach Nick Swaney has announced the signings of three student-athletes who will continue their academic and athletic careers with the Wildcats in the 2024-25 academic year.  The trio includes Camryn Johnson of Berwyn, Gaia Stancikova (guy – uh / stan – sik – ova) of Bologna, Italy and Meg Thompson from Greene, Iowa.
Camryn Johnson is from Broken Bow High School where she had a stellar career with the Indians.  She was the Class C individual medalist last fall as a senior, shooting rounds of 71 and 78 (149) helping the Indians win a fourth consecutive Class C team championship.  Johnson recorded a scoring average of 74.25 during her senior season and holds nearly every school record that includes an 18-hole best round of 65.
Johnson was the Class C state runner-up as a junior in 2022 (79-77/156), placed ninth as a sophomore and was a state qualifier as a freshman.  She was a two-time Nebraska Coaches Association Super State selection, two-time Southwest Conference champion and four-time All-Southwest Conference honoree.  Johnson also excels in the classroom earning two Academic All-State honors.
"Camryn is a terrific competitor," remarked Coach Swaney.  "She has a bigger desire to be successful than most players.  Camryn has shown with her individual and team success at the high school level that she has the ability to make those around her better.  We are excited to see what the future holds for her at WSC."
Gaia Stancikova is from Licco Scientifico Malpighi Visitandine High School in Bologna, Italy.  She has played in numerous events in Italy and Slovakia, taking first place in the International Slovak Junior Amateur Championship and playing in the Italian International Women's Championship.  Last summer on the Global Junior Golf Tour, she had three top 10 finishes in four tournaments and a 76.33 scoring average with 11 of 13 rounds shot in the 70's.
"Gaia has shown that she is a consistent scorer in difficult international fields," said Swaney.  "She has represented her national teams and performed well under the pressure of those events.  Gaia has the potential to be a very good player quickly in the NSIC.  It will be great to have her with our program and college next year and we are excited to be a part of her golf and academic career in the United States."
Meg Thompson is from Greene, Iowa and currently plays at Des Moines Area Community College.  She will have two years of eligibility with the Wildcats starting in the fall.  Last spring Thompson earned All-Region Second Team honors and this fall was named Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week twice after posting top three finishes in five of six tournaments with one medalist honor.  A graduate of North Butler High School in Iowa, Thompson was a three-time Class 1A state qualifier that included a 10th place finish as a junior with scores of 85-86 (171).  She was named Top of Iowa (East Division) Conference Player of the Year in 2022 and was a three-time All-Conference selection.
"We are excited Meg chose to join Wayne State College," commented Swaney.  "She is an incredibly hard worker and a terrific leader.  Meg has had a great career at DMACC and her game has continually improved. I am excited to see her continue her success as a Wildcat this fall."
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the 15-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  The Wildcats open the 2024 spring schedule March 7-9 at the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff in Wesley Chapel, Florida.
