Concordia-St. Paul erupted for 28 runs on Wayne State pitching in sweeping the Wildcats Saturday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader in St. Paul, Minnesota by scores of 10-1 and 18-14, offsetting a four home run performance in the second game by WSC junior first baseman
Kaden Young. WSC drops to 21-11 and 16-6 in the league while the Golden Bears are 19-14 and 11-13 in the NSIC.
The opener saw the host Golden Bears separate themselves from the Wildcats late with a seven-run sixth inning to post a 10-1 win.
Wayne State's lone run came in the sixth inning as
Chase Douglas singled and later scored on an RBI groundout from
Trey Wells that cut the CSP lead to 3-1 after 5 ½ innings.
The Golden Bears then used six hits and one WSC error to produce seven runs to cap the 10-1 win.
WSC had just five hits in the game, led by
Colin Lynam's two singles. Douglas,
Carter Thomas and Wells each had singles.
Starter
Corbin Kirk (3-2) suffered the loss in 5 1/3 innings, charged with seven runs on eight hits.
Kadyn Van Hill worked the final 2/3 of an inning.
The second game saw the Wildcats open an early lead with a nine-run second inning and led 11-2 after 2 ½ innings, but the 'Cats could not contain the Golden Bears who stormed back with a six-run third and four-run fourth and then scored five runs in the final two frames to outscore the Wildcats 18-14 in completing the sweep.
Junior first baseman
Kaden Young hit a pair of homers in the nine-run second – a two-run shot early in the inning followed by a solo blast late that gave WSC a 9-0 lead.
Shortstop
Quinn McCafferty added a two-run blast
Carter Thomas belted a two-run double in the big inning to go with a RBI double by Wells and RBI single from
Colin Lynam.
After CSP scored twice in the bottom of the second to make the score 9-2, junior second baseman
Chase Douglas ripped a two-run homer putting the 'Cats ahead 11-2 in the third.
But the host Golden Bears followed suit with another big inning, a six-run third, to cut the WSC lead to 11-8, and used a grand slam in the fourth inning to tie the contest at 12-12 after just four innings.
Each team scored single runs over the next two innings to have a 13-13 tie after six innings. Young's third homer of the game in the sixth inning tied the score.
CSP scored twice in the seventh and three more in the eighth for an 18-13 lead and WSC got one more run in the ninth on Young's fourth home run of the contest over the right field fence to make the final score 18-14.
Wayne State had 15 hits in the game. Young became the first Wayne State player to ever hit four home runs in a contest, going 4 for 5 with five RBI and four runs scored. Douglas finished 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBI while McCafferty was 2 for 5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.
Carter Thomas and
Colin Lynam each had two hits for WSC.
Five Wildcat pitchers were used in the contest. Starter
Kolt Davis worked the first 2 1/3 innings.
Josh Kilzer and
Brody Sintek also pitched while
Eli Crnkovich (3-3) suffered the loss in 2 2/3 innings charged with seven hits and five runs.
Alex Calabrese also worked the final 1/3 inning.
Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul close out their three-game NSIC series Sunday with a nine-inning game at 12 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
