Big second half gives SCSU win over Wildcats

            St. Cloud State outscored Wayne State 48-30 in the second half and sank 15 3-pointers on the Wildcats to post a 93-69 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  SCSU stays unbeaten in the NSIC South at 5-0 and 7-3 overall while WSC drops to 5-6 and 1-4 in league play.
            The Wildcats trailed 14-7 five minutes into the contest, but battled back and stayed close with the Huskies and took a pair of leads.
            WSC still trailed 20-15 at the 11:10 mark, but used an Andrew Stokes layup to take their second lead of the game at 28-26 with 7:47 to go before halftime. 
            The last lead of the game for the Wildcats came at 30-29 following a Darshan Thomas driving layup with 5:52 to go in the first half.  SCSU then scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 37-32 advantage.
            WSC got within one at 40-39 on a Matt Noll three-point play with 1:09 left in the first half, but the host Huskies rattled off five quick points in the final minute to grab a 45-39 lead at intermission.
            St. Cloud State scored the first six points of the second half to take their first double-digit lead at 51-39.  WSC used baskets from Eldon Turner and Thomas to get as close at eight at 51-43, but the Huskies used 60 percent shooting for the first 30 minutes of the game to slowly pull away from the Wildcats and take the win.
            The Huskies pushed their advantage to 66-51 at the midway point of the second half and ended with a 93-69 win.
            Thomas paced Wayne State in scoring with 18 points, making 9 of 15 shots from the field.  He also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.  JJ Ferrin (16) and Aurrion Harris (10) also reached double figures for the Wildcats.
            Wayne State was 29 of 62 from the field for 46.8 percent, including 6 for 17 behind the arc.  The 'Cats were just 5 of 9 at the free throw line.
            Luke Winkel had a game-high 27 points for St. Cloud State.  Azayah Washington added 17 points with Kynan Philippe scoring 15.
            The Huskies ended the game shooting 58.6 percent on 34 of 58, including a sizzling 15 for 25 behind the arc for 60 percent.  SCSU was 10 of 15 at the line.
            St. Cloud State held a 34-28 advantage in rebounding.  Matt Noll had four assists to lead WSC.  Andrew Stokes had four steals and Aurrion Harris recorded two of Wayne State's four blocks.
            Wayne State will be at home for NSIC South Division games next weekend hosting Concordia-St. Paul Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Winona State Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.
