Darshan Thomas produced a double-double off the bench with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Wayne State College in a 79-65 Northern Sun Conference South Division men's basketball win over Concordia-St. Paul Thursday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 6-6 and 2-4 in the NSIC while CSP drops to 8-4 and 3-3 in the league.
The host Wildcat trailed much of the first half, but found themselves trailing by just four points at intermission 31-27.
Six minutes into the game WSC was trailing 17-8. Still trailing by eight – 23-15 with 9:13 to play in the half – the 'Cats scored eight straight points to knot the score at 23-23 thanks to a pair of baskets by
Matt Noll including a dunk and baskets from
Kai Smith and
JJ Ferrin.
The Golden Bears closed the half with a pair of 3-pointers and ended with a 31-27 lead at the break.
WSC came out strong to open the second half, using an 11-2 scoring run, to take a 38-33 lead at the 16:41 mark.
Concordia-St. Paul rallied and took what ended up being their last lead of the night at 56-55 with 6:40 to play.
The Wildcats took control of the game scoring the next nine points over 3:34, fueled by a 3-pointer and basket from Thomas, giving WSC the lead for good at 64-56.
CSP got as close as six at 71-65, but the 'Cats closed the game with eight straight points that include six free throws and a dunk by Thomas to cap his double-double night giving Wayne State the 79-65 win.
Thomas had 21 points and 12 rebounds on 9 of 14 shooting to pace the Wildcats.
Andrew Stokes chipped in 15 points on 6 of 6 from the field and 3 for 5 at the line.
JJ Ferrin scored 11 and
Aurrion Harris added 10.
Wayne State shot 49 percent for the game making 32 of 65 shots. The 'Cats were just 3 of 13 from the 3-point line and hit 12 of 16 free throws.
For Concordia-St. Paul, Ben Kopetzki scored a game-high 25 points.
CSP shot 41.5 percent on 27 of 65 from the field, including 10 of 34 behind the arc. The Golden Bears were just 1 of 4 at the free throw line.
Wayne State held a comfortable 44-30 edge in rebounding thanks to 12 boards by Thomas and seven each from Stokes and Harris.
Noll handed out six assists while Ferrin had four steals.
The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting Winona State in NSIC South Division play with tip off set for 1 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
