'Cats impressive in shutout sweep over Briar Cliff

            Redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe fired a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts while going 5 for 8 at the plate to lead Wayne State softball in an 8-0 and 7-0 non-conference doubleheader sweep Wednesday evening over Briar Cliff at the Dordt Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa.  WSC is now 4-0 on the season while the Chargers are 0-2. 
            The opener saw the Wildcats erupt for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-0 victory.
            WSC opened the scoring in the first when Jordyn Klein walked and scored on a Taylor Coleman double.
            The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when WSC produced seven runs on five hits with a pair of Briar Cliff errors to break the game open.
            Big hits in the inning included a two-run double from Emilee Marth and run-scoring doubles from Jordyn Rochholz and Kennadi BorngrebeMary Krystofiak and Leah Chance each added doubles in the inning for the 'Cats.
            Wayne State held a 13-5 edge in hits over Briar Cliff in the opener.  Coleman and Marth each went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.  Rochholz and Borngrebe both finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and double.
            Senior Samantha Felt (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief, allowing four hits with three strikeouts.  Starter Taylor Coleman worked the opening three frames and gave up just one hit while whiffing seven batters and walking six.
            The second game saw Borngrebe fire a one-hit shutout in the circle while going 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the 'Cats to another shutout win 7-0.
            WSC opened the first with one run when Klein opened with a single and scored on a Lillie Timm single for a 1-0 lead.
            The 'Cats scored again in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Leah Chance to brought home Borngrebe (singled).
            Wayne State added two runs in the fifth on a pair of RBI groundouts as Coleman (single) and Marth (single) crossed home plate.
            Three insurance runs in the seventh for WSC were the result of a two-run homer from Maddie Scobee and and RBI single by Mary Krystofiak.
            Wayne State had 13 hits in the win while holding Briar Cliff to one.  Borngrebe went 3 for 4 with a triple.  Marth ended 2 for 4 while Krystofiak was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.  Chance added two hits while Scobee had a two-run homer.
            Borngrebe moved to 2-0 in the circle with the complete-game win, allowing just one hit while fanning 12 batters with six walks. 
            Wayne State resumes play next weekend when the Wildcats play five games at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas starting Friday at 4 p.m. vs. Northwest Missouri State.
