Wayne State softball was defeated by the #13 University of Central Oklahoma Broncos this morning down in Topeka, Kansas 8-1. The Wildcats scored their one run in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 2-1 deficit before the Broncos scored six unanswered.
UCO scored the first two runs in the top of the first inning after
Samantha Felt got two batters out. The Wildcats connected on two pitches,
Jordyn Klein singled to left field and
Leah Chanced singled down the left field line, but the Broncos stalled the WSC offense.
The 'Cats defense put down the side in the top of the second inning.
Mary Krystofiak stepped up to the plate and homered out to left center for the Wildcat's only run.
In the third inning, UCO took advantage of two errors by WSC to put two more runs on the board to make it 4-1 after three innings. In the bottom of the third, WSC got two runners on base after a hit by pitch and a walk. The offense was unable to get anything going after those plays.
Neither squad saw any action in the fourth inning as both sides were put down in order.
With bases loaded in the fifth after giving up a single and two batters hit by pitch, Felt was able to get out of the jam by striking out the third out in three pitches.
In the sixth inning, the Broncos scored three more runs on four hits that included a two-run home run.
Taylor Coleman would put the Broncos away in the top of the seventh to give the 'Cats one more chance to get back in the game.
Taylor Fritz would walk after coming in to pinch hit.
Haylee Weber singled down the right field line and Fritz reached third. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, UCO would shut the door on them and take the 8-1 win.
The Wildcats play Central Missouri at 3:30 p.m. in the Washburn Tournament.
