Wayne State softball struck first in their first game today against the Missouri Western State Griffons in the bottom of the first inning.
Samantha Felt started in the circle for the Wildcats and through the first three innings only gave up one hit.
In the fourth frame, the Griffons scored eight runs on four hits. WSC only responded with one run in the bottom and
Maddie Scobee hit a sacrifice fly to left field and
Jordyn Rochholz stepped on the dish.
Fifth inning saw no runs scored, each team leaving one base runner on. WSC's defense slowed down MWSU in the sixth inning as well, only allowing one runner on after a walk.
Kennadi Borngrebe doubled to center field on a full count in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch a few batters later. Scobee got on base with a walk but the 'Cats were unable to score either runner.
The Griffons extended their lead to 9-2 in the final inning on a double to center.
Leah Chance reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chance took advantage of an error by MWSU and scored the Wildcats third run, making it a 9-3 ball game.
WSC would be unable to get anymore runs and were defeated by the Griffons 9-3. Chanced put up two runs and Rochholz went 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI.
Grace Lucka led the pitchers with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Wildcats close out play at the Washburn Tournament Tuesday afternoon facing host Washburn at 12:30 p.m.
