The Wayne State softball team used a late rally in the opener and a pair of home runs in the second game to record a 7-6 (eight innings) and 7-3 Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader sweep over Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC is now 25-16 and 10-7 in the league while the visiting Beavers drop to 16-26 and 3-15 in NSIC games.
The opener saw WSC control the contest until giving up four unearned runs in the top of the seventh to Bemidji State allowing the Beavers to take the lead. But a solo homer in the seventh by
Maddie Scobee, her second of the game, sent the contest into extra innings and then the 'Cats won a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth for the come-from-behind win.
Bemidji State scored twice in the first inning to hold a 2-0 lead in the opener until WSC erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 lead. Scobee blasted a three-run homer over the left field wall while
Lillie Timm contributed a two-run single as big hits in the inning.
But the Beavers came up with four unearned runs in the seventh thanks to two WSC errors to grab a 6-5 lead. Scobee then came through again with a one-out solo homer over the right field wall to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Jordyn Klein opened with a walk followed by a single from
Leah Chance and a walk to
Emilee Marth to load the bases.
Hayley Murphy then sent a fly ball to center field and Klein beat the throw home on a head first slide to give the Wildcats a thrilling 7-6 win in eight innings.
WSC had 14 hits in the win, led by Scobee two home runs going 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBI. Klein, Chance, Marth and Murphy each had two hits for the Wildcats in the win.
Sami Felt, the third of three WSC pitchers, got the win in relief and is now 4-4 on the season. She threw the final two innings.
The second game saw the Wildcats grab an early 7-0 lead and finish with a 7-3 win to complete the sweep.
The 'Cats took a 2-0 lead in the first on a
Kennadi Borngrebe two-run double.
In the third, Marth and Borngrebe each connected for solo homers putting the 'Cats in front 4-0.
Three more runs in the fourth gave WSC a 7-0 lead as Marth had an RBI double along with a run-scoring single from Klein.
BSU closed the scoring with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh for a 7-3 Wildcat win.
Wayne State had seven hits in the win. Marth was 2 for 2 with a homer, double and three runs scored while Borngrebe was 2 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBI. Klein added two hits in three trips to the plate and scored twice.
Sophomore
Taylor Coleman worked the first five innings to earn the win, now 5-4 on the season. She gave up two runs on six hits and had four strikeouts. Felt worked the final two innings and allowed one run on four hits.
WSC will be at home again Sunday hosting Minnesota Crookston for Senior Day in an NSIC doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
