Wayne State softball hosted the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles this afternoon while also celebrating the Wildcat Seniors with Senior Day. WSC lost both contests despite out hitting UMC in both games. The 'Cats fall to 25-18 overall and 10-9 in conference. Crookston improves to 17-28 and 5-15 in NSIC play.
In game one the Wildcats scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Senior
Lauren Laudick doubled to left center and
Taylor Coleman scored the run. Coleman and the defense would hold the Golden Eagles scoreless in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, UMC would score four runs on three hits and one Wildcat error to take the 4-1 lead. Their first two runs came from a triple and the next two were scored on a single to right center.
WSC would only score one run in the bottom of the inning with
Kennadi Borngrebe crossing the dish after
Mary Krystofiak grounded out.
In the bottom of the seventh inning,
Leah Chance singled to center to get some momentum for WSC. The 'Cats looked to get back into with one runner on and the tying run at the dish. UMC shut the door on WSC in game one, holding onto the 4-2 lead.
Game two was a pitching battle between senior
Grace Lucka and the Golden Eagle pitcher. Both pitched a complete game, with Lucka striking out seven batters and only giving up one hit.
UMC started the game with their only hit, a double to center and the next batter was walked and only one out. The fourth batter lined out to Krystofiak at first and she got the double-play as she beat the runner back to the bag.
Wayne State recorded two hits in the bottom of the second and had runners in scoring position but we unable to get home. In the top of the fourth, Lucka would strike out two of the three as the 'Cats put the Golden Eagles down in order.
In the final inning, UMC took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to get runners into scoring position. With one out, the Golden Eagles scored the lone run of the game on a ground out to the second baseman.
WSC looked to get runners on and go to extras. Coleman led off and singled to left to get on. Krystofiak grounded out and Coleman was able to advance to second. With two outs, and a runner in position to tie, the final Wildcat would strikeout swinging. UMC took game two 1-0 after the two pitchers put on a pitching clinic.
Wayne State will be back in action Friday afternoon in Wayne, America as they take on the Mavericks from Minnesota State. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
