Wayne State rally in opener gives 'Cats split against Minnesota State

Wayne State rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the opener to record a 7-6 win over Minnesota State in Northern Sun Conference softball Friday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The visiting Mavericks used a similar rally in the nightcap to gain a split with a 9-3 victory.  WSC is now 26-19 and 11-10 in the league while MSU sits at 35-15 and 19-5 in NSIC games.
The opener saw freshman third baseman Maddie Scobee crush a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to culminate a rally where WSC trailed 5-0 early in the game.
Minnesota State scored two in the second and three in the third for a 5-0 lead.  The 'Cats got four runs back in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run double from Emilee Marth, an RBI single by Kennadi Borngrebe and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Scobee.
After the Mavericks scored once in the top of the fifth for a 6-3 lead, WSC used a double down the left field line by Leah Chance and a walk to Marth putting runners on first and second with two outs.  Scobee then belted a three-run homer into a gusty northwest wind over the left-center field wall putting the 'Cats in front for a 7-6 advantage.
Starting pitcher Borngrebe walked a pair of batters in the seventh to put two runners on.  Senior reliever Samantha Felt came on and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat and the 'Cats held on for the 7-6 win.
Both teams had eight hits in the game.  Scobee had a home run and four RBI to lead the 'Cats while Chance was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.  Marth also doubled and had two RBI in the win.
Borngebe worked 6 1/3 innings to get the win, now 13-6 on the season.  She allowed eight hits and six runs (four earned) with seven walks and four strikeouts.  Felt came on in the seventh and got the final two outs to preserve the win and earn her sixth save of the year.
The second game saw the Mavericks score seven runs in the final two innings to erase a 3-2 Wildcat lead as Minnesota State gained a split with a 9-3 win.
The 'Cats opened the scoring in the first inning as Borngrebe singled up the middle to bring home Jordyn Klein (single) for a 1-0 WSC lead.
MSU scored twice in the third for a 2-1 lead, but WSC answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to regain the lead at 3-2.  Lauren Laudick had an RBI single to right field scoring Taylor Coleman (hit by pitch) while Chance added an RBI single up the middle to bring home Laudick for a 3-2 Wildcat lead.
But the Mavericks had five runs on five hits in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the seventh for the 9-3 victory.
WSC held a 10-8 advantage in hits, but had four fielding errors.  Chance was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while Laudick went 2 for 4 with a double and single.  Borngrebe also had two singles for the 'Cats.
Coleman started the game for WSC and worked four innings, giving up just one hit and two runs with five strikeouts.  Felt worked the final three innings of relief and suffered the loss, now 4-5 on the year.
Wayne State visits Sioux Falls Saturday for a NSIC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
