Wayne State softball took on the Northern State Wolves this afternoon on the road. WSC jumped out to early leads in both contests and used big bats to out hit the Wolves 29-11 and scored 19 runs in the two games. Wayne State won game one 9-3 and then won game two 10-2.
Taylor Coleman was 5-7 with four runs scored and four RBIs and recorded three strikeouts in two innings.
The Wildcats struck first in the second inning with
Maddie Scobee hitting a single up the middle and
Hayley Murphy being batted in. Redshirt freshman
Kennadi Borngrebe started in the circle for the 'Cats and struck out two batters in the second inning to keep Northern off the board.
WSC added three runs behind a
Lillie Timm two RBI double to right and a Borngrebe double to left. The Wolves scored one run and Borngrebe escaped the jam after loading the bases.
Wayne State scored one run and then put the Wolves down in order in the fourth inning to hold a 5-1 lead through four innings of play.
In the fifth inning, the Wildcats recorded three hits and three runs scored thanks to a
Taylor Coleman double and a
Jordyn Klein single through the right side, extending the lead to its largest of the game, 8-1.
NSU would tack on two runs in the final three innings and Wayne State would hold onto the game one win with a 9-3 victory. Borngrebe and
Grace Lucka combined for 11 strikeouts and only three runs scored in the win.
Game two the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead through the opening two innings. Coleman doubled to left center and earned an RBI when
Leah Chance advanced home.
Mary Krystofiak singled to the shortstop to bat in Timm. On the same play, Coleman would take advantage of an error and score the third run.
Two more singles in the next inning gave WSC a 5-0 lead before Northern responded with two home runs in the bottom of the second.
Wayne State would start to add some insurance runs through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to stretch their lead to a commanding 10-2.
Samantha Felt would put away the final three batters of the game, first in a double play and then a ground out for the third out.
The Wildcats improve to 23-12 on the season and the Wildcats close out their NSIC road trip Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at MSU Moorhead starting at 1 p.m.
