Game Recap: Softball |

'Cats drop road games at MSU Moorhead

The Wayne State softball team dropped a pair of NSIC road games Sunday afternoon at MSU Moorhead by scores of 4-1 and 1-0.  The 'Cats fall to 23-14 and 8-5 in league play with the losses while the Dragons move to 14-29 and 6-10 in NSIC contests.
The opener saw the host Dragons open the game with a two-run homer to take the early lead and never look back in a 4-1 win.
MSUM scored twice in the first and added solo runs in the third and fifth innings.
WSC scored their lone run of the game in the fifth inning when Mary Krystofiak singled to open the frame.  Pinch runner Masyn Bunnell moved to second on a single from Maddie Scobee and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.  Bunnell later scored when Jordyn Klein stole second with Bunnell touching home plate on a Dragon throwing error.
MSU Moorhead had one more hit than WSC 6-5.  Five different Wildcat players had singles – Klein, Taylor Coleman, Krystofiak, Scobee and Taylor Fritz.
Kennadi Borngrebe (12-6) suffered the pitching loss in 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs with four strikeouts.  Reliever Grace Lucka worked the final 3 1/3 innings and was charged with one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The second game saw the Dragons use a two-out rally with no runners on base in the fifth inning to score the lone run of the contest for a 1-0 win over the Wildcats.
The 'Cats threatened to score in the first inning with three singles to load the bases, but could not get another hit and left the bases loaded.
MSU Moorhead scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning as the Dragons used a two-out, bases empty single followed by a walk, wild pitch and another single to score the lone run of the contest.
WSC put two runners on in the sixth with no outs thanks to a single and fielder's choice, but could not get the extra base hit to produce a run as the Dragons held on for the 1-0 victory.
Both teams had six hits in the game.  Klein was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.  Coleman, Emilee Marth, Fritz and Scobee each singled.
Coleman (4-3) pitched five innings and suffered the hard-luck loss, giving up just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.  Senior Samantha Felt worked the final frame without giving up a hit.
The Wildcats return home to start a four-doubleheader home stand Wednesday hosting #13 Augustana at 2 p.m.
