St. Cloud State scored runs in six of eight innings to handle Wayne State 11-5 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Missouri. WSC is now 5-5 and 1-2 in the league while SCSU is 3-3 and 2-1 in NSIC play.
After St. Cloud State opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second, WSC grabbed its lone lead of the contest with three runs in the top of the third for a 3-2 advantage.
Max Heard walked,
Nate Cunningham was hit by a pitch and
Braden Cannon homered to left field to put the 'Cats in front.
The lead was short-lived as the Huskies scored twice in the third and one more in the fifth for a 5-3 lead.
WSC got within one at 5-4 in the sixth inning as
Casey Prychak reached on an error and later scored on a single to third base by
Paul Schuyler.
But St. Cloud State grabbed control of the game with a four-run sixth and added another run in the seventh for a 10-4 lead.
Wayne State scored its final run in the top of the eighth as
Brayden Chaney singled and crossed home plate on a Heard single to left field making the score 10-5. SCSU closed the scoring with one run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final 11-5.
St. Cloud State held a 13-7 edge in hits on WSC. Heard was 3 for 3 with three singles, an RBI and run scored. Schuyler finished 2 for 5 with an RBI while Cannon had Wayne State's lone extra base hit – a three-run homer.
Starting pitcher
Carson Obrecht (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on four hits over four innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Reliever
Adam Eggert worked the next 1 2/3 innings, charged with four runs on four hits.
Kyler Hanson pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits while
Grant Renken worked a hitless inning of relief and had one strikeout.
The two teams conclude their four-game series Sunday with a non-conference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
