The Wayne State baseball team opened their 2026 season late Friday night with two wins at Hawaii Hilo. The 'Cats won game one of the double header 3-1 and won game two 9-5.
Freshman Tyler Albert got the win in his first career start for the Wildcats in game one Friday afternoon. The freshman pitched seven innings only giving up one run on fire hits and retired seven batters.
The Vulcans scored first in the fifth inning with runners on the corners and a sacrifice bunt allowed their only score to come in.
With Nate Cunningham and Braden Chaney on second and third, Paul Schuyler hit a single to center and the pair of runners scored to give WSC the one run lead in the top of the 7th inning.
The insurance run would come the following inning after junior Gabe Monosmith singled up the middle to be the first runner on base. Chaney would pinch run for Monosmith and eventually come in to score after a Cunningham single.
Braden Cannon would move to the mound in the ninth and earn his first save of the season, giving up one hit and forcing three outs to the outfield. 'Cats get their first win of the 2026 season 3-1.
WSC struck first in game two with Chaney scoring on a sacrifice fly to center from Max Heard and Monosmith followed up with a homerun to left. Hilo responded with one run in the first inning.
The Vulcans took the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs scored off a double and an error allowed a runner to score, giving them the lead 3-2.
Brooks Kneifl scored an unearned run in the top of the 3rd inning to tie up the score after he single to left and advanced to second thanks to Cunninghams single.

Monosmith reached first off an error to open the 5th inning for the 'Cats and he would steal second one batter later. Cannon would take the walk and put two 'Cats on the bases. Senior catcher Casey Prychak hit a three-run homer to right field to give Wayne State a 6-5 lead.
Chaney opened the 6th inning with a deep triple down the left field line and would score on a dropped fly ball that allowed Easton Mains to reach first. Mains would steal second and then come home on a ground out play, giving Heard and RBI. 'Cats increase their lead to 8-5.
The final run would come from a Prychak double that sent Cunningham home. WSC gets the game two win 9-5.
