Wildcat rallies help WSC complete sweep of Minnesota Crookston

Wayne State used late rallies in both games Saturday to complete a Northern Sun Conference baseball sweep over Minnesota Crookston at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex, winning 10-7 in the opener and 11-9 in 10 innings in the nightcap.  The Wildcats improve to 13-9 and 5-4 in the NSIC while the Golden Eagles drop to 11-10 and 4-5 in conference play.
The opener saw WSC rally from a 7-4 deficit scoring three runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 10-7 win in a game that saw a combined 16 walks by the two teams.
The 'Cats opened the scoring with a four-run first, highlighted by a Nate Cunningham two-run single, to take the early lead.
But Minnesota Crookston came back with one run in the second, five in the third and one in the fifth, to grab a 7-4 advantage on the 'Cats.
WSC started their rally in the sixth with three runs to tie the game at 7-7.  Freshman Tony Coniglio had an RBI double with Cunningham added an RBI single.
In the seventh, WSC scored three runs on just one hit while using three UMC walks and a pair of errors to get the 10-7 lead.  A bunt single from Braden Cannon was the lone hit in the inning.
WSC held an 8-6 edge in hits over UMC.  Cunningham finished 3 for 5 with three RBI while Cam Madsen went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.
Freshman reliever Drew Lieser, the fourth of five WSC pitchers, got the win in relief.  He worked one hitless inning with one strikeout.  Senior closer Braden Cannon worked the seventh and notched his fifth save of the season.
The second game saw Minnesota Crookston send the game into extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the'Cats responded with three in the top of 10th and held on for an 11-9 win and a sweep of the series.
The contest was tied 4-4 after seven innings of play with Wayne State appearing to take control of the game in the top of the eighth scoring four runs for an 8-4 lead.  Madsen had a two-run single up the middle to bring home Easton Mains and Braden Cannon while Max Heard followed with an RBI single to score Madsen.
But the Golden Eagles used a three-run homer and a two-out Wayne State error to bring in the tying run sending the game into extra innings.
Senior catcher Casey Prychak led off the 10th with a solo homer to right-center field.  Madsen walked and later scored on a wild pitch while Mains singled and also scored on a wild pitch.  Minnesota Crookston did rally in the 10th, scoring one run and putting another runner on before closer Braden Cannon got a strike out and ground out to end the game giving WSC the thrilling 11-9 extra-inning win.
