Game Recap: Baseball |

Wildcats fall in series finale to UMary

The University of Mary scored 11 unanswered runs to break open a close game as the Marauders clinched an NSIC three-game baseball series with Wayne State in a 16-4 seven-inning win over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Basebal Complex in Wayne.  WSC slips to 21-17 and 13-12 in the NSIC while UMary is 21-14 and 14-8 in conference play.
The Marauders jumped out quickly, scoring three runs in the first for a 3-0 advantage.  WSC got one run back in the bottom of the first as Gabe Monosmith blasted a homer over the left center field wall making the score 3-1.
UMary plated a pair of runs in the second to go in front 5-1, but WSC rallied and scored three times in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Monosmith singled with two outs and Nate Cunningham doubled down the left field line putting runners at second and third.  A UMary wild pitch brought home Monosmith with the first run.  Paul Schuyler then walked and both Cunningham and Schuyler scored when the Marauders made a pair of errors on the same play cutting the UMary lead to 5-4.
The Marauders then scored at least one run in the next four innings, including four run frames in the fifth and seventh, to pull away from the Wildcats and post a 16-4 win in seven innings.
Monosmith went 3 for 4 with a homer, double and single to go with two runs scored to lead Wayne State's seven-hit effort.  Cunningham finished 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles while Madsen and Braden Cannon each singled.
Starter Matthias Tronsdon (1-3) was tagged with the pitching loss in three innings of work.  Brooks Kneifl, Drew Lieser, Keegan Hansen and Adam Eggert also saw action from the bullpen.
The Wildcats will be at home again Wednesday afternoon hosting the University of Sioux Falls in an NSIC doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
