Wildcats post important home sweep over Sioux Falls

Wayne State recorded two important home wins in Northern Sun Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex topping Sioux Falls 7-4 and 5-1.  The Wildcats entered the day seventh in the NSIC standings and improved to 23-17 overall and 15-12 in the NSIC while third-place Sioux Falls drops to 18-18 on the season and 14-9 in league play.
The Wildcats needed a six-run fifth inning in the opener to rally from a 4-0 deficit and finish with a 7-4 victory.
Sioux Falls scored two runs in the second followed by single runs in the third and fourth for a 4-0 advantage.
WSC got on the scoreboard in the fourth when senior second baseman Paul Schuyler homered down the left field line making the score 4-1.
The 'Cats erupted for six runs on four hits and two walks to go with one Cougar error to take the lead for good.
Gabe Monosmith started the inning with a two-run double driving home Cam Madsen (walk) and Max Heard (single).  Schuyler walked and with two outs senior catcher Casey Prychak belted a three-run homer down the left field line on the first pitch of the at-bat to give WSC the lead at 6-4.  The 'Cats added an insurance run when Easton Mains singled scoring Brayden Chaney (USF error).
Both teams had six hits in the game.  Monosmith was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.  Prychak had a three-run homer while Heard, Schuyler and Mains each singled.
Junior reliever Colin Grady (4-1) earned the pitching win with three scoreless innings of relief.  He allowed just two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.  Starter Tyler Albert worked the first four innings and was charged with four runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
The second game saw senior starter Clement Febus limit Sioux Falls to just two hits over seven innings as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 5-1 win.
After Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the second with a walk and an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead, Wayne State plated two runs in the third to grab a 2-1 advantage.  Mains had a one-out double down the left field line and scored on Heard's double to left center field.  Monosmith then followed with a run-scoring single through the left side bringing home Heard.
WSC added a run in the fourth Chaney singled to right field and later scored when Heard was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded for a 3-1 Wildcat lead.
In the sixth, Mains connected for a solo homer with two outs over the left field wall giving the 'Cats a 4-1 lead and WSC closed the scoring in the eighth when Schuyler walked and scored on a Prychak sacrifice fly.
WSC had six hits in the win to just two for Sioux Falls.  Mains went 2 for 3 with a homer, double and two runs scored while Chaney was 2 for 4 with a run scored.  Heard doubled and had two RBI while Monosmith added an RBI single.
Febus (1-2) was stellar on the mound allowing just two hits and one run in seven innings of work, fanning four batters while walking four.  Sophomore Jace Coleman pitched a hitless eighth inning while senior reliever Braden Cannon came on in the ninth and retired all three batters with one on strikeout to preserve the 4-1 win.
The Wildcats hit the road this weekend for an NSIC three-game series at Winona State with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and a nine-inning game Sunday at 12 p.m.
