Southwest Minnesota State handed Wayne State College a 2-0 setback in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon in Marshall, Minnesota. It was the first win of the season for the host Mustangs, now 1-11 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC while Wayne State is now 3-12-1 overall and 0-8-1 in league play.
The host Mustangs wasted little time to get on the scoreboard as Kelly Fitzgerald scored 2:14 into the contest to give SMSU an early 1-0 advantage. She scored again at the 26:09 mark to put the Mustangs in front 2-0.
Southwest Minnesota State outshot WSC 19-6 in the contest and had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks over the Wildcats. Tiffani Kellerman and Mikayla Comba were each credited with two shots for WSC while junior goal keeper Emily Walker made 10 saves in a losing effort while facing 19 SMSU shots.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend, entertaining Minnesota, Crookston Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and MSU Moorhead Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the WSC Soccer Complex.
