Wayne State split a non-conference college baseball doubleheader with Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. Junior starter Austen Wisroth improved to 3-1 on the season by working six strong innings in a 9-5 Wildcat win in the opener, but Bemidji State salvaged a split in the second game by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-10 win over the Wildcats. Wayne State is now 5-7 on the season while Bemidji State sports a 6-4 mark following Saturday's games.
The first game saw Wayne State open the scoring with four runs in the second inning for a 4-0 advantage. Taylor Welk connected for a two-run homer down the left field line to highlight the inning. After Bemidji State scored two runs in the fourth inning to cut the WSC lead to 4-2, the Wildcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Mike Bisenius had a two-run triple to key the inning.
Bemidji State produced three runs in the fifth inning, trimming the WSC lead to 7-5. Wayne State came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 9-5 lead as Luke Farrar singled down the left field line to score one run while the other came in on a Taylor Welk sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.
Austen Wisroth moved to 3-1 on the season with the win, working six strong innings. He allowed five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Senior Matt Meier worked the seventh inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
The second game saw Bemidji State score four runs on five hits with the game-winning run coming across on a wild pitch as the Beavers rallied for an 11-10 win over Wayne State.
The Wildcats held an 8-2 lead after two innings, scoring three runs in the first and five more in the second. But Bemidji State chipped away at the Wildcat lead scoring two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth before coming up with the four run rally in the seventh.
Wayne State's three run first was capped by a Mike Bisenius two-run double while another two-run double from Bisenius highlighted the Wildcats' five-run second inning along with a solo homer by Braulio Acosta and a run-scoring single from Nick Bidroski and an RBI double by Justin Beranek.
The Wildcats had two runs in the fourth inning as Travis Parsons delivered a two-run homer over the left field fence to round out Wayne State scoring in the game.
Senior reliever Eric Dye (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore starter Eric Schwieger worked the first three innings and was charged with five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore reliever Jared Barth pitched the next three innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore lefthander Trevor Reeves recorded the final out of the game on a strikeout.
Wayne State and Bemidji State will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
