Wildcats pound out 17 hits in 15-7 win over Wisconsin-Parkside

            Wayne State College pounded out 17 hits and scored nine runs in the final two innings to break open a close game as the Wildcats went on to post a 15-7 win over Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday evening at the Southern Indiana Dunn Hospitality Baseball Tournament in Evansville, Indiana.  Wayne State improves to 2-3 with the win while the Rangers from Wisconsin-Parkside drop to 0-4.

            The Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers struck first scoring four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead on Wildcat starter Austen Wisroth.  But the Wildcats responded with a four-run top of the third inning to even the score at 4-4.  Big hits to highlight the inning for WSC included a two-run double by Mike Bisenius along with run-scoring singles from Braulio Acosta and Justin Beranek. 

            WSC took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a single run as CJ Nolen doubled to right center to lead off the inning and scored on Luke Farrar's infield single, putting the Wildcats in front 5-4.  The 'Cats added another run in the sixth inning as Farrar led off with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Beranek for a 6-4 Wayne State lead. 

            After Wisconsin-Parkside scored in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 6-5, the Wildcats scored twice in the eighth for a 8-5 lead without getting a hit, using a walk and Wisconsin-Parkside error to produce two runs.  WSC then erupted for seven runs in the top of the ninth inning on six hits to give the Wildcats a 15-5 advantage.  Braulio Acosta produced a two-run double while Patrick Burkhart added a two-run single for big hits in the inning.  Travis Parsons had two hits in the inning including a two-run single for the Wildcats.  Wisconsin-Parkside added two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 15-7.

            Wayne State had 17 hits in the game with 14 singles and three doubles.  Redshirt freshman centerfielder Luke Farrar was 3 for 3 with two walks and four runs scored while junior shortstop Braulio Acosta was 3 for 4 with three RBI's and two runs scored.  Mike Bisenius was 2 for 5 with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored while Justin Beranek, Travis Parsons and Jake Ritzdorf each added two singles apiece in the win.

            Austen Wisroth (1-1) pitched the first seven innings to notch the victory, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking one.  Reliever Eric Dye worked the final two innings and gave up two runs on three hits with no strikeouts and one walk. 

            Wayne State is scheduled to play two games on Monday, taking on the University of Indianapolis at 2:00 p.m. and defending NCAA Division II national champion Southern Indiana at 5:00 p.m. at the Southern Indiana Dunn Hospitality Baseball Tournament in Evansville, Indiana.
