WSC Softball splits double header with Washburn University, snaps 29 game home winning streak

            Wayne
State and Washburn University split a double-header played at the Pete Chapman Complex in Wayne, Nebraska on Sunday afternoon. WSC won the first game 9-5 while WU took the second game 2-1.

            The Wildcats dug an early hole in the first game as Washburn scored two runs in the top of inning number one. Wayne State responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead. Aerielle Earleywine belted a triple down the left field line to clear the bases as Kassie Nurton, Ashley Prettyman and Megan Hagemann all came into score and give WSC a 3-2 lead. Jordan King then singled up the middle to deliver Earleywine and expand the lead to 4-2. Wayne State then added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Washburn would add one run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3 but Wayne State added another three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Brittany Greenwood scored on a throwing error and Earleywine and King each drove in a run to build the WSC lead to 9-3. Washburn would add to more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-5 which would end up being the final.

            Sara Scheffert pitched a complete game for WSC and improved to 4-3 on the season going seven innings with five strikeouts and three walks while allowing 10 hits and five runs (five earned).

            WSC was led at the plate by Brittany Greenwood and Jordan King who each had two hits while Aerielle Earleywine, Dani Sandel, Vicki Nielsen, Ashley Prettyman and Kassie Nurton each had one hit. Earleywine had a game-high five RBI's.

            Washburn took game to with a 2-1 decision and snapped Wayne State's 29 game home winning streak in the process. The Wildcats scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning when Brittany Greenwood singled up the middle to score Vicki Nielsen on the play. Washburn would score one run in the top of the sixth and an insurance run in the top of the seventh to hold on for the 2-1 win over Wayne State.

            Jordan Harris suffered the loss for the 'Cats and dropped to 4-2 on the season as she went seven innings with two strikeouts and three walks while surrendering seven hits and two runs (two earned).

            Eight players for WSC had hits in the contest as Wayne State outhit the Lady Blues 8-7 in the loss.

            The Wildcats will be at home again Wednesday afternoon hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
