Wayne State improved to 12-8 Wednesday afternoon with a double-header sweep of Southwest Minnesota State as the 'Cats won game one 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Brittany Greenwood single to left field and WSC won game two in five innings as Kristen Martinson belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to give Wayne State an 11-3 victory.
In game one, Sara Scheffert and Chelsey Evans engaged in a pitching duel for eight innings. The Wildcats left nine runners on base in the contest while the Mustangs stranded four players on base. WSC center fielder Kassie Nurton preserved the shutout in the top of the seventh inning by gunning down a SMSU runner at home plate to end the threat.
Wayne State would end the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Dani Sandel led off with a double down the left field line. Kaiti Williams grounded out to the pitcher but it was enough to advance Sandel to third. Brittany Greenwood then stepped to the dish and hit a walk-off single down the left field line to drive in Sandel for the game-winning score.
Ashley Prettyman had two hits in the game to lead Wayne State at the plate while Brittany Greenwood had the only RBI of the game. Sara Scheffert went eight strong innings and improved to 4-3 on the season with one strike out and two walks while allowing six hits and no runs.
The scoring started early in game two as the Mustangs posted one run in the top of the first inning. Wayne State responded with three runs in the bottom of the first Greenwood's bat stay hot as she belted a double off the left field fence with the bases loaded to clear the pond and give Greenwood three RBI. SMSU would tie things up quickly responding with two runs in the top of the second to tie the score at 3-3. The Wildcats again answered, this time with four runs in the bottom of the second. Jordan King flew out to center field to bring in Ashley Prettyman, Aeriell Earleywine scored on a single to center field by Vicki Nielsen, Dani Sandel scored on a passed ball and Kaiti Williams singled to center field to score Nielsen giving Wayne State a 7-3 lead.
The score remained 7-3 until Wayne State came up again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kaiti Williams and Brittany Greenwood both singled to begin the inning and then Ashley Prettyman drew a walk to load the bases up. Kristen Martinson was then called upon to pinch hit for Kassie Nurton and Martinson would not disappoint. Martinson drilled a pitch over the left field wall to give the Wildcats the walk-off grand slam to end the game 11-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Brittany Greenwood, Kaiti Williams and Vicki Nielsen all had two hits for WSC in the game while Kristen Martinson led the team with her four RBIs and Greenwood knocked in three teammates.
Jordan Harris improved to 5-2 on the season with four strikeouts and two walks while allowing three hits and three runs (three earned).
