Freshmen pitchers Sara Scheffert and Kelcie Bormann fired back-to-back shutouts Tuesday afternoon to lift the Wayne State College softball team in a 1-0 and 4-0 sweep over the University of Sioux Falls in non-conference play at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.  The Wildcats improve to 15-11 on the season while the visiting Cougars fall to 10-6.

The opener saw Lincoln Southeast freshman Sara Scheffert toss a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts in a 1-0 win over the Cougars.  The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning when Kassie Nurton led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when Jordan King reached on a USF fielding error.

USF had five hits in the contest to four by the Wildcats.  Dani Sandel was 2 for 3 with a triple and single while Nurton and Kaiti Williams each singled.

The second game saw Creston, Iowa freshman Kelcie Bormann fire a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts to earn her first collegiate win, a 4-0 blanking of the University of Sioux Falls.

WSC opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning as Vicki Nielsen and Bormann each recorded RBI singles to score Jordan King and Kaiti Williams respectively.  The 'Cats took a 3-0 lead in the third when Nielsen doubled and scored on a Bormann single up the middle.  WSC added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Nielsen singled to left field and later scored on a pinch-hit double from Kristen Martinson making the final score 4-0.

Bormann finished the game firing a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks.  Offensively, WSC had 12 hits in the game to just four by the Cougars.  Nielsen finished 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.  Nurton also finished 3 for 3 at the plate while Bormann was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI's to go along with her stellar pitching performance.

The Wildcats return to Northern Sun Conference play Wednesday afternoon when Wayne State hosts #13 Minnesota State in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
