#13 Minnesota State uses longball to down WSC softball

            #13 Minnesota State hit four home runs to help the Mavericks sweep Wayne State 5-3 and 8-3 in Northern Sun Conference softball played Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The visiting Mavericks are now 25-6 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 15-13 and 1-5 in league play. 
            Minnesota State scored single runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.  The 'Cats would respond in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dani Sandel scored from third base on a throwing error by the catcher cutting the MSU advantage to 2-1.
            Minnesota State hit a second solo homerun in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-1 for the Mavericks. Wayne State would knot the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Sara Scheffert singled to left field and drove in Vicki Nielsen and Kaiti Williams on the play. The Mavericks regained the lead in the seventh inning on a solo home run and RBI single to take a 5-3 lead. The Wildcats were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game ended with the Mavericks on top 5-3.
            Jordan King led the 'Cats at the plate in game one with three hits while Aeriell Earleywine, Dani Sandel, Vicki Nielsen and Sara Scheffert each had one hit. Scheffert had both RBIs for Wayne State.
            Sara Scheffert suffered the loss and falls to 6-5 on the season after seven innings of work where she recorded two strikeouts and two walks while allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned).
            The second game saw the Mavericks pull away late with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings for an 8-3 win to complete the sweep.
            MSU took an early 2-0 lead with two first inning runs.  WSC scored in the bottom of the first when Earleywine walked and scored on Sandel's RBI double to make the score 2-1.  MSU scored twice in the third and sixth innings for a 6-1 lead, but WSC came back in the bottom of the sixth and scored two runs on a Megan Hagemann two-run homer over the left field wall to trim the Maverick advantage to 6-3.  The Mavericks scored twice in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-3.
            Minnesota State outhit the Wildcats 10-4.  Hagemann's two run homer led WSC at the plate followed by Sandel's RBI double.  Jordan King and Brittany Greenwood each singled for the Wildcats.
            The Wildcats be at home again this weekend, hosting Minnesota Duluth Saturday and Bemidji State Sunday in Northern Sun Conference doubleheaders starting at noon each day at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
