Minnesota Duluth takes two from Wayne State softball

            Minnesota Duluth won a pair of games from Wayne State College in Northern Sun Conference softball played on a warm Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.  The Bulldogs won the opener 8-4 and then blanked the Wildcats in the second game 2-0.  UMD is now 22-14 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC while dropping Wayne State to 15-15 on the season and 1-7 in league play.
            The first game saw UMD belt out two home runs while taking advantage of seven Wildcat walks as the Bulldogs posted an 8-4 win.  Minnesota Duluth scored once in the first and four in the third to take a 5-0 lead.  WSC came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Vicki Nielsen singled and scored on a Sara Scheffert double to left center field for the first run.  Kaiti Williams singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the second run while Brittany Greenwood's sacrifice fly scored Scheffert with the third run.
            UMD added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for an 8-3 lead with WSC scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh when Aeriell Earleywine walked and scored on a Dani Sandel single up the middle to make the final score 8-4.
            Minnesota Duluth had nine hits to eight for WSC.  Williams finished 2 for 3 with a double and run scored while Nielsen was 2 for 4 with a double and run scored.  Scheffert doubled while Jordan King, Sandel and Megan Hagemann each singled.
            Freshman Sara Scheffert (6-6) was tagged with the pitching loss, firing all seven innings.  She allowed nine hits and eight runs with four strikeouts and seven walks.
            The second game saw Minnesota Duluth's Julia Nealer limit Wayne State to just four hits as the Bulldogs completed the sweep with a 2-0 win.  UMD scored both runs in the first inning.  WSC threatened to score several times, but could not cash in on the opportunities.  In the fourth, Nielsen walked and Kaiti Williams singled to put runners at first and second, but Kelcie Bormann popped to second to end the inning.  In the sixth, Aeriell Earleywine singled and advanced to third but was stranded there. 
            Minnesota Duluth had five hits to four by the Wildcats.  All hits for WSC were singles – two by Williams and one each from Earleywine and King.
            Kelcie Bormann suffered the hard-luck loss for the Wildcats, firing a complete game.  The freshman from Preston, Iowa allowed just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. 
            Wayne State will be at home again on Sunday hosting Bemidji State in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
