Freshman pitcher Kelcie Bormann fired a two-hit shutout and blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Wayne State a 2-0 win in the second game of a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The Wildcats captured the opener 6-1 to complete the sweep, improving to 17-15 on the season and 3-7 in the NSIC while Bemidji State falls to 7-20 overall and 0-10 in league play.
The Wildcats used a balanced hitting attack and solid pitching from Sara Scheffert and Jordan Harris to win the opener 6-1. WSC opened the scoring in the first inning when Aeriell Earleywine singled and scored on a Kaiti Williams single to centerfield for a 1-0 early lead. The 'Cats added two more runs in the second when Jordan King delivered a two-run single that scored Kassie Nurton and Scheffert for a 3-0 Wildcat advantage.
After BSU scored in the sixth to trim the WSC lead to 3-1, but the 'Cats added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-1 win. King produced another two-run single for the big hit in the inning while Kristen Martinson and Kassie Nurton also singled for the Wildcats.
WSC had 10 hits in the contest to four by Bemidji State. King finished 2 for 3 with four RBI's while Williams and Nurton each accounted for two hits. Scheffert pitched five strong innings to earn the win, now 7-6 on the season. She allowed four hits and one run with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Jordan Harris worked the final two innings and struck out three batters without giving up a hit.
The second game was a pitcher's duel between Wayne State's Kelcie Bormann and Bemidji State's Courtney Anderson. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Bormann produced for the Wildcats. Vicki Nielsen singled to shortstop with one out followed by Bormann's homer over the leftfield wall that gave WSC the 2-0 lead.
It was all the support she would need as Bormann, now 2-3 on the season, fired a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and just one walk as WSC went on to the 2-0 win to complete the sweep over the Beavers.
WSC outhit Bemidji State 5-2 in the game as freshman catcher Megan Hagemann was 2 for 3 with a double. Bormann added her solo home run with two RBI's while Kaiti Williams and Nielsen each singled for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will be at home on Tuesday afternoon entertaining Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
