The Wayne State College softball team split at Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader at MSU Moorhead Saturday afternoon at Nemzek Field in Moorhead, Minnesota as the Wildcat posted a 6-0 win in the opener while the host Dragons followed with a 6-0 win over WSC in the second game.  Wayne State is now 23-19 overall and 9-11 in the NSIC while MSU Moorhead now sports records of 9-26 on the season and 5-17 in league play.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start in the opener, scoring three runs on just one hit while taking advantage of five walks by MSU Moorhead starting pitcher Brandi Howell to take a 3-0 lead in the first.  The lone hit of the inning for WSC was an RBI single by freshman catcher Megan Hagemann.  WSC took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third when Jordan King and Brittany Greenwood scored on a Hagemann triple to center field.  The 'Cats added an insurance run in the seventh when Dani Sandel reached on a Dragon fielding error and later scored when Kaiti Williams reached on another MSUM error to make the final score 6-0.

WSC had five hits in the win with Hagemann going 3 for 4 with three RBI's to lead the Wildcats at the plate.  Vicki Nielsen and Brittany Greenwood also had hits for Wayne State.  Freshman starter Kelcie Bormann (5-4) pitched six shutout innings to get the win, allowing just four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.  Sophomore Jordan Harris pitched a perfect seventh inning to preserve the shutout win.

The second game saw WSC fall 6-0 to the Dragons as the Wildcats went just 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position while leaving nine runners on base as MSU Moorhead salvaged a split in the doubleheader.  The Dragons scored three runs in the third inning, added one more in the fourth and two in the sixth for the 6-0 win.  WSC had the leadoff batter reach base four of the seven innings in the contest, but could not take advantage of the opportunity.

Kassie Nurton was 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and two singles to lead the Wildcats in hitting while Kaiti Williams was 2 for 3 with a double and single.  Kelcie Bormann had the other Wildcat hit, a single.

Sara Scheffert (10-8) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats, charged with two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings while Jordan Harris finished the game in the circle, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout and three walks in the final 3 2/3 innings.

WSC will conclude its Northern Sun Conference road trip Sunday afternoon with a noon doubleheader at Minnesota, Crookston.
