Dani Sandel was 4 for 8 with five RBI's and four runs scored while pitchers Kelcie Bormann and Jordan Harris fired complete game wins to lead the Wayne State College softball team in a 11-3 and 8-0 sweep at Minnesota, Crookston Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference softball played in Crookston, Minnesota. The Wildcats are now 25-19 overall and 11-11 in the NSIC while the host Golden Eagles fall to 9-32 and 3-19 in league play.
The Wildcats overcame an early 3-1 deficit and scored seven runs in the final two innings to pull away for an 11-3 win in the opener. WSC tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the second on RBI singles from Jordan King and Dani Sandel. A Kaiti Williams solo homer to lead off the third inning put WSC in front for good at 4-3.
The 'Cats then scored four runs in the fifth with Kelcie Bormann blasting a solo homer to lead off the inning followed by a big two-run single from King to highlight the inning. WSC added three insurance runs in the sixth inning with Brittany Greenwood's two-run single the big hit in the frame.
WSC had a season-high 16 hits in the win as Brittany Greenwood, Megan Hagemann and Jordan King each produced three hits while Dani Sandel and Kaiti Williams accounted for two hits apiece. Williams and Bormann each homered for WSC in the win.
Freshman pitcher Kelcie Bormann improved to 6-4 on the season with a complete-game win. She allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
The second game saw Jordan Harris throw a three-hit shutout while Dani Sandel homered, tripled and had three RBI's to lead the Wildcats in the 8-0 win to complete the sweep.
WSC took a 3-0 lead in the third when Vicki Nielsen blasted a two-run homer that scored Jordan King followed by an RBI single by Greenwood that scored Kelcie Bormann, who doubled. The 'Cats took a 4-0 lead in the fourth when Sandel tripled and scored on a Jordan King groundout. WSC added four more runs in the fifth inning on just two hits, a Megan Hagemann single and a three-run homer by Sandel, to give the Wildcats the 8-0 win.
Sandel had the hot bat for WSC in the second game going 2 for 4 with a homer, triple, three RBI's and two runs scored. Vicki Nielsen also homered and had two RBI's for the Wildcats while Kelcie Bormann doubled.
Sophomore Jordan Harris pitched her first shutout of the season, improving to 6-5 with the three hit shutout. She struck out four and walked two in recording her fourth complete game of the season.
WSC will play their final home doubleheader of the season on Wednesday when the Wildcats host #3 Winona State in Northern Sun Conference play at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex starting at 1:00 p.m.
