Wayne State completed their season sweep of Southwest Minnesota State with two more wins over the Mustangs on Tuesday afternoon to bring their season record to 5-0 vs. SMSU. The Wildcats used a 10-7 comeback victory to win game one and held the Mustangs off for a 1-0 win in game two.
The first game saw the Wildcats give up three runs to SMSU in the top of the first inning and one more in the top of the second inning as
Jordan Harris was harassed for six hits and four runs (three earned) in only 1.1 innings of work.
Sara Scheffert would come in during the second inning and provide relief for Harris as the 'Cats would rally from their 4-1 deficit after two innings of play. Both teams would score one run in the fourth inning as Southwest Minnesota State would take a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning. Wayne State would erupt with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Jordan Harris led off with a single to left field and
Dani Sandel belted a two run homer over the left field fence to cut the Mustangs' lead to 5-4.
Vicki Nielsen then doubled to right center and
Kaiti Williams would switch placed with her the next at bat as she doubled to left field. Williams would later score when
Ashley Prettyman would hit a slow roller to first base for the RBI to give WSC a 6-5 lead. After two runs in the top of the sixth gave SMSU the 7-6 advantage over Wayne State, the Wildcats would keep the hot bats going with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open and win 10-7 as the Mustangs could not score in the top of the seventh. The sixth inning scoring was led by
Kaiti Williams smashed a double to left field with the bases loaded to bring home Nielsen, Sandel and
Aeriell Earleywine. WSC was out hit 11-7 in game one but was able to draw eight walks to only three given up by Wildcat pitchers.
Kaiti Williams and
Vicki Nielsen were the go to 'Cats at the dish as Williams went 2-3 and Nielsen went 2-2. Williams had four RBIs, two runs and a walk to go with her two hits while Nielsen drew two walks and scored four times on the day.
Sara Scheffert went 5.2 strong innings of relief pitching with three strikeouts and three walks while allowing five hits and three runs (three earned).
Game two saw a pitching duel between Rachel Hoeppner of Southwest Minnesota State and Kelcie Borman of Wayne State. Hoeppner pitched 6.0 innings for the Mustangs while striking out two batters with no walks and allowed six hits and one run (zero earned). Bormann pitched a complete game six hit shutout for WSC with seven strikeouts and two walks while surrendering six hits and no runs. The only score of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when Bormann helped herself out with a single through the right side to bring in
Vicki Nielsen.
Megan Hagemann and
Brittany Greenwood led Wayne State in game two with two hits each while Bormann and
Dani Sandel each recorded a hit of their own.
The Wildcats will be on the road this weekend visiting Concordia-St. Paul Friday and St. Cloud State Saturday in Northern Sun Conference doubleheaders starting at noon each day.
