Freshman pitchers Kelcie Bormann and Sara Scheffert tossed complete game wins as Wildcat head coach Krista Wood recorded her 200th career win Saturday afternoon as the Wayne State softball team swept St. Cloud State 3-1 and 2-1 in Northern Sun Conference softball played at Selke Field in St. Cloud, Minnesota. WSC is now 21-17 overall and 7-9 in the NSIC while St. Cloud State falls to 18-22 and 4-10 in league play.
In the opener, WSC overcame an unearned run by St. Cloud State in the first inning as the 'Cats scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rally for a 2-1 win over the Huskies. WSC trailed 1-0 after four innings, but the 'Cats put together a two-out rally to tie the score in the fifth as Aeriell Earleywine doubled and scored on a Kelcie Bormann single. WSC took the lead for good in the sixth when Dani Sandel doubled and scored on a Jordan King single to make the score 2-1.
WSC outhit St. Cloud State in the first game 8-6 as Sandel was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Earleywine and Bormann each finished 2 for 3 while King and Brittany Greenwood also had hits for the Wildcats. Bormann (4-4) earned the complete game win in the circle, allowing six hits and one run (unearned) with eight strikeouts and no walks.
The second game saw Wildcat starter Sara Scheffert fire a complete game four-hitter as the Wildcats completed the sweep in a 3-1 win, giving WSC head coach Krista Wood her 200th career victory.
WSC opened the scoring in the first inning when Earleywine singled to lead off the game and scored on a Sandel double for a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats took a 2-0 lead in the third when Sandel blasted a solo homer. SCSU scored its lone run of the game in the third to make the score 2-1, but WSC scored an insurance run in the fifth inning as Earleywine walked and later scored on a Vicki Nielsen single to make the final score 3-1.
The 'Cats had eight hits in the contest while holding the Huskies to four. Earleywine finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored to lead a balanced effort at the plate. Sandel was 2 for 4 with a homer, double and two RBI's. Nielsen, Kaiti Williams, Jordan King and Kristen Martinson each had singles for the Wildcats.
Scheffert improved to 9-7 on the season with the complete game win, allowing just four hits and one run (unearned) with four strikeouts and two walks.
WSC will be at home on Wednesday afternoon hosting Upper Iowa in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
