Game 1 - Wayne State 5 Concordia-St. Paul 1Game 2 - Wayne State 7 Concordia-St. Paul 0 Wayne State College hit five home runs as the Wildcats recorded a 5-1 and 7-0 sweep over Concordia-St. Paul in NSIC softball played Saturday on Senior Day at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. The Wildcats improve to 32-12 and 18-4 in league play while the visiting Golden Bears fall to 15-29 and 10-14 in the NSIC.
In the first game,
Megan Hagemann and
Melanie Alyea each homered while Wildcat pitchers
Sara Scheffert and
Kelcie Bormann limited Concordia-St. Paul to just four hits in a 5-1 win. WSC scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and added two more runs in the fifth.
The first inning saw
Jordan King single and score on a
Sam O'Brien single for a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats went ahead 2-0 in the second on
Melanie Alyea's lead off homer to right field. In the fourth, Hagemann connected for a two-out homer to make the score 3-0.
In the fifth, Bormann doubled and scored on
Melanie Alyea's single while
Shelby Wobken delivered a pinch-hit single that scored O'Brien, who walked, to close out the WSC scoring.
Wayne State had 10 hits in the win, led by
Melanie Alyea going 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI.
Jordan King was also 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while
Kelcie Bormann had two hits in four at bats with a double and run scored while Hagemann homered.
Scheffert (15-8) worked the first five innings to earn the win, allowing just three hits and no runs with seven strikeouts and one walk. Bormann pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on one hit with two striekouts.
The second game saw
Kaiti Williams homer twice while Bormann belted a grand slam to power the Wildcats in a 7-0 win over the Golden Bears.
Williams hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third to give WSC a 3-0 lead. Bormann then connected for a grand slam to highlight the four-run fourth as the 'Cats built a 7-0 lead and cruised to the win to complete the sweep.
WSC had eight hits in the game to four by Concordia-St. Paul. Williams was 2 for 2 with a pair of homers and three runs scored while Bormann was 1 for 1 with a grand slam, four RBI's and two runs scored.
Sam O'Brien added a triple for the Wildcats at the plate.
Scheffert earned another win in the circle in the second game, improving to 16-8 on the year with four solid innings. She gave up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Bormann finished the game pitching the final three innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Wayne State will be on the road next week, starting with a Wednesday 1 p.m. doubleheader at #25 Winona State.
