Game 1 - Wayne Sttae 5 Minot State 1Game 2 - Wayne State 8 Minot State 3 After suffering a pair of losses at the University of Mary on Friday, the Wayne State softball team bounced back Saturday with a sweep at Minot State winning 5-1 and 8-3 in Northern Sun Conference action played at Herb Parker Stadium in Minot, North Dakota. The Wildcats improve to 34-16 overall and 20-8 in league play with the wins.
In the first game, Wayne State used three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to snap a scoreless tie after five innings as the Wildcats posted a 5-1 win over the Beavers.
In the sixth, WSC used four hits to score three runs.
Kaiti Williams doubled with
Kelcie Bormann singling to put runners at first and third.
Melanie Alyea doubled down the left field line to score Williams while
Vicki Nielsen produced a two-run double to right center field that scored Bormann and Alyea for a 3-0 lead.
After Minot State scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 3-1, WSC added two insurance runs in the seventh for a 5-1 final as
Lexie Loos was hit by a pitch and scored on a Williams two-run homer to right field.
WSC had eight hits in the game to just five for Minot State. Williams finished 2 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored on a home run and double. Melania Alyea finished 2 for 3 with a double and RBI while Bormann was 2 for 4 with a double. Nielsen doubled and had two RBI's.
Sara Scheffert fired a complete game for the Wildcats, improving to 17-11 on the season. She gave up just one run on five hits while striking out nine Minot State batters with two walks.
The second game saw the Wildcats produce 14 hits with five players accounting for at least two hits in a 8-3 win to complete the sweep.
WSC took a 4-0 lead after two innings. After Minot State got within 4-2 in the fourth inning, WSC used the long ball to pull away for the win.
A four-run fifth inning was highlighted by two-run homers from
Megan Hagemann and
Melanie Alyea to highlight a six hit inning.
Melania Alyea led a balanced offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBI's.
Kelcie Bormann was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while
Jordan King,
Kaiti Williams and
Sam O'Brien each added two hits offensively.
Kelcie Bormann was the beneficiary of the Wildcat offensive outburst and collected the pitching win, improving to 17-4. She pitched a complete game, charged with three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Wayne State will play in the NSIC Softball Tournament starting Thursday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with official pairings to be announced by the league office Sunday.
