Kelcie Bormann fired a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a 6-0 win to highlight Wayne State's 6-0 and 13-5 sweep over Bemidji State Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference softball played at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC improves to 24-10 overall and 10-2 in the NSIC with the wins while BSU falls to 11-15 and 0-10 in league play.
The story in the first game was Bormann as the Preston, Iowa native whiffed 16 Beaver batters while allowing just two walks to record the no-hitter giving Bormann a 13-2 pitching record.
Offensively, WSC scored two runs in the third and put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning. In the third, junior catcher
Megan Hagemann belted a solo homer followed by a walk to
Kaiti Williams and a double by Bormann that scored Williams.
In the fifth,
Sam O'Brien had a two-run single,
Monique Alyea added an RBI double and
Melanie Alyea produced an RBI single to account for the four runs in the inning.
WSC had eight hits in the game, led by Hagemann going 3 for 3 with a home run. Bormann and
Monique Alyea added doubles while
Jordan King,
Sam O'Brien and
Melanie Alyea each contributed singles in the win.
The second game saw the Wildcats pound out 19 hits in a 13-5 win over the Beavers in five innings. WSC scored three runs in the first and second innings and six more in the third to take a 12-1 lead after three innings. After BSU scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth, WSC ended the game with a single run in the bottom of the fifth for the win.
O'Brien was 3 for 4 with a home run, double and five RBI's to lead the Wildcat barrage at the plate.
Jordan King was 3 for 3 with three runs scored while Bormann and
Monique Alyea each had two hits as 13 different Wildcat players recorded hits in the win.
Bormann (14-2) worked 3 1/3 innings to get another win, allowing two hits and one run (unearned) with five strikeouts.
Cassy Miller pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits while sophomore
Sarah Macias pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up four hits and three runs.
Wayne State will be in action again on Wednesday visiting Southwest Minnesota State for an NSIC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
