Wildcat softball snaps four-game skid with sweep over Minot State

            The Wayne State softball team used some home cooking Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak as the Wildcats notched a sweep over Minot State in Northern Sun Conference softball by scores of 7-1 and 6-5 in 8 innings.  WSC is now 16-8 and 2-2 in the NSIC while MISU is now 20-6 and 1-2 in league play.
            The first game saw four different players record two hits each as the Wildcats also took advantage of five Minot State errors in the 7-1 win.
            Lexie Loos and Jordan King each went 2 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the 'Cats at the plate.  Kaiti Williams was 2 for 3 with a run scored while Melanie Alyea went 2 for 4.  Loos tripled while King doubled for Wayne State's extra base hits in the contest.
            Senior Sara Scheffert (3-2) was the winning pitcher, working the first five innings.  She was charged with one run on three hits while walking seven and striking out four.  Junior reliever Cassy Miller pitched the final two innings and did not allow a runner with three strikeouts.
            The second game saw Kelcie Bormann produce the game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth inning that scored Lexie Loos with the winning run as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a thrilling 6-5 win in extra innings over the Beavers.
            WSC had 10 hits in the win to seven for Minot State.  Sam O'Brien was 3 for 4 with two RBI's including a solo homer.  Bormann finished 2 for 3 with three RBI's while Shelby Wobken was 2 for 2 with one run scored.
            Miller (4-1) was the winning pitcher in relief, working the final three innings in place of starter Kelcie Bormann.  Bormann worked the first five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts.  Miller pitched the final three innings and gave up two hits and one run with two walks and two strikeouts.
            Wayne State will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting the University of Mary in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
