Wayne State built early leads in both games, but visiting Winona State stormed back to sweep a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader over Wayne State 7-3 and 12-2 in 5 innings Tuesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC drops to 17-11 and 3-5 in the NSIC while Winona State improves to 24-7 and stays perfect in league play at 6-0.
WSC built a 3-0 lead in the opener after two innings, thanks to a solo homer in the first by
Jordan King and an RBI double by
Alyssa Schropp in the second.
But Winona State tied the game with a three-run third, then took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning followed by an insurance run in the sixth for the 7-3 win.
Winona State had 11 hits in the game to eight for WSC. King led the Wildcats going 2 for 4 with a solo homer and double while Schropp was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI.
Kaiti Williams,
Melanie Alyea,
Shelby Wobken and
Megan Hagemann each singled for the Wildcats.
Cassy Miller (5-2) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief of starter
Sara Scheffert. Scheffert gave up three runs on four hits in four innings with two strikeouts and four walks while Miller was charged with four runs on seven hits over the final three innings with one strikeout.
The second game saw WSC take a 2-0 lead in the first, but was held to just two hits the rest of the game as Winona State used a six-run third inning to pave the way for a 12-2 win in five innings over the Wildcats.
The 'Cats used singles by
Lexie Loos, King and
Kelcie Bormann to build a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Winona State put together a six-run third inning to take the lead for good at 6-2, then added two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to make the final score 12-2.
Winona State had 13 hits in the game to five for Wayne State. Loos finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and run scored. Bormann, King and
Brooke French each singled.
Bormann (9-6) suffered the pitching loss for WSC, working all five innings.
The Wildcats will be on the road this weekend, playing at MSU Moorhead Friday at 2 p.m. and Northern State Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
